The amnesia defense

The amnesia defense comes in handy when you don’t want to admit that you did something wrong, committed a crime and anything else that you would rather forget.

I am sure people have used it since the beginning of time.

Husbands lying to wives. Wives lying to husbands. Bosses lying to workers and workers lying to bosses. And then claiming they don’t remember. The possibilities are endless.

Today we can add another celebrity to the amnesia-as-defense group.

Pop singer Chris Brown appearing on a taped Larry King show, to air on Wednesday, apologized for his physical attack of singer and ex-girlfriend Rihanna in February.

But he claims he does not remember hitting her. Police photos show extensive cuts and bruises to her face from being punched by Brown. He also held her in a headlock and cut off her ability to breath. She almost lost consciousness.

Brown has been sentenced to 5 years probation and 6 ..continue reading

Sickness hiding among us

Two stories broke this week that chilled me to the bone. Both involved children.

Both involved adults abusing children and in one case killing a child. We have a problem that must be addressed to protect all children from these circumstances.

In the first case which dates back to 2007 a mother, Ermina Errico, was charged with neglect in the death of her 25 year old daughter. The mother was found to be extremely controlling of all aspects of her daughter’s life since birth. She controlled her daughter’s meals and what she wore (garbage bags instead of cloths). She did not allow her daughter to socialize with anyone after school. The cause of death was malnutrition and anorexia nervosa, and the autopsy revealed that she suffered from brain atrophy and excess fluid in her lungs and brain. For his co-operation in the case, her father was charged with third degree neglect and was sentenced to ..continue reading

Wow, I didn’t realize this still exists

There are still 20 states in the US that allow corporal punishment in the classroom. The hitting of children.

That is mind boggling in a country that considers itself one of the most advanced western nations.

A report by the Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights Watch has an even more distrubing fact. Disabled children receive more corporal punishment than others.

Over 200,000 children are punished by spanking, paddling or other physical means every year. Almost 20% of those are disabled.

The states that still permit this form of punishment include  Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming.

A 6-year-old, first-grade boy with autism, was paddled at his Mississippi elementary school by an assistant principal who weighed 300 pounds. He “picked up an inch-thick paddle and paddled him” on the buttocks, the report said.

One principal was quoted saying ..continue reading

The internship you pay for

In one of my previous posts I noted that there are college admission counselors charging large sums of money to “help” high school students with their college admission applications.

This weekend I read that a new “service” is available to parents with money to burn.

The paid summer internship. The “paid” refers to parents paying for internships for their children

And it is not cheap. It can cost from $8000 to $10,000 dollars for 8 weeks. For that money the intern gets housing and meals and in many cases a low level job, possibly a gofer.

Business is booming especially in these tough economic times when there are jobless qualified applicants who may also be competing for the internships

I thnk this again creates an unfair advantage for those who have money. There may be many students who are more qualified than the ones placed by these companies but because they don’t have the ..continue reading

Drunk mother kills 8 including herself

The Westchester NY Medical Examiner released a report today that shows that Diane Shuler was drunk and under the influence of marijuana when she drove the wrong way on the Taconic State parkway last week and killed herself, her daughter, three nieces and three men in the SUV she hit head-on. Her 5 year old son was the only survivor. She called her brother (the father of the 3 nieces in her car) shortly before the crash and said she wasn’t feeling well.

Her blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit or the equivalent of about 10 drinks. A bottle of Vodka was found in the mini van she was driving.

This is a tragedy but I can not help but thinking that if this is true how selfish could this woman have been.

Did she not realize with that amount of alcohol and marijuana that she was impaired? was she an ..continue reading
