Minnesota is a strange place. The land of Al Franken and Michele Bachmann.

And now we have Congressional candidate Allen Quist opposing Rep. Tim Walz in southern Minnesota’s First Congressional District.

If you listen to Quist you may think he is God’s gift to Congress. Or at least he thinks he is.

Here is what he said in December. “Our country is being destroyed. Every generation has had to fight the fight for freedom… Terrorism? Yes. That’s not the big battle.  The big battle is in D.C. with the radicals. They aren’t liberals. They are radicals. Obama, Pelosi, Walz: They’re not liberals, they’re radicals. They are destroying our country.”

His take on health care reform “This is the most insidious, evil piece of legislation I have ever seen in my life… Every one of us has to be totally committed to killing this travesty… I have to kill this bill.”

He will single handedly kill this bill. LOL.

Is the Tea Party just a scam to raise money?

Here is an interesting little fact. talkingpointsmemo has uncovered the following: “The political action committee behind the Tea Party Express (TPE) — which already has been slammed as inauthentic and corporate-controlled by rival factions in the Tea Party movement — directed almost two thirds of its spending during a recent reporting period back to the Republican consulting firm that created the PAC in the first place.

Wow.

Is the Tea Party just a scam? or has this been obvious from day one?

“Our Country Deserves Better (OCDB) spent around $1.33 million from July through November, according to FEC filings examined by TPMmuckraker. Of that sum, a total of $857,122 went to Sacramento-based GOP political consulting firm Russo, Marsh, and Associates, or people associated with it.”

“OCDB, which built the Tea Party Express, is essentially a Russo, Marsh creation.”

The full report is here.

Blackwater wins Iraqis lose

Six Blackwater guards who opened fire on civilians in Iraq In September 2007 were found to be not guilty by a district judge. The judge dismissed the charges against the guards over procedural errors. District Judge Ricardo Urbina said the US justice department had used evidence prosecutors were not supposed to have.

The guards killed 17 Iraqi civilians and wounded another 27, some were paralyzed by the shootings.

The US presents an image of law and justice to the world but does not seem to be able to convict those committing crimes overseas.

The shootings by the Blackwater guards was clearly a criminal act. Blackwater, whose name is now Xe Services has not faced charges related to the shooting. Erik Prince its founder has been described as a lunatic by some believing that his company is above the law in Iraq.

Iraqis are outraged by the decision.

The NYT reports “What are we — not human?” asked Abdul Wahab Adul ..continue reading

Love note from Pete Sessions?

This is very strange.

The Miami Herald reports that Congressman Pete Sessions, the chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, sent the following message to Allen Stanford, the financier who is accused of bilking investors out of $7 billion (a mini Madoff), hours after Stanford was charged by federal agents.

“I love you and believe in you,” said the e-mail sent on Feb. 17. “If you want my ear/voice — e-mail”. It was signed Pete.

The Justice Department is investigating millions of dollars Stanford and his staff contributed to lawmakers over the past decade to determine if the banker received special favors from politicians while building his spectacular offshore bank in Antigua.

The money Stanford gave Sessions and other lawmakers was stolen from his clients while he carried out what prosecutors now say was one of the nation’s largest Ponzi schemes.

What is going on here? What kind of relationship did Sessions have with Stanford? What ..continue reading
