No cost of living adjustment for Social Security recipients for the next two years. That is was the trustees of Social Security are projecting.
In effect that is actually a decrease for most since those who receive Medicare prescriptions face an increase in rates next year. The premiums for the prescriptions are automatically deducted from the social secuirty payments.
This is bad news for seniors. Many are already rattled by the health care reform debate. From recent reports many seniors don’t know what or who to believe when it comes to health care reform and daily reports (although discredited) that there will be cuts to their Medicare benefits.
The Social Security Cost of Living adjustment, that has been automatically paid since 1975, is tied to inflation which was negative for this year.
Several advocates for seniors are calling on Congress to increase Social Security even though the cost of living adjustment does not call for ..continue reading

With the death of Ed McMahon the original talk show era has ended. I watched Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon for years. Their shows were something to look forward to and most nights worth staying up for.
Ed McMahon will always be best remember for being Carson’s sidekick on the Tonight show, although he performed in other shows and movies. His laugh was the perfect balance to Carson’s joke presentation. And who can forget the Carnac the Magnificent act.
It is disturbing that the era of straight variety and interview format ended when Leno and Letterman took over and since then each host tries to outdo the others with crazy antics.
It is questionable why some have “talk shows” at all. Jimmy Fallon, while somewhat funny on SNL seems uncomfortable in this role. And some of the others are just not of the same caliber as the originals.

Years ago I subscribed to several financial magazines. I signed up for multi-year subscriptions because they were cheaper. The one thing that doesn’t seem to change are the number of financial geniuses who write for the magazines, several also make regular appearances on financial TV shows. None of these geniuses saw the credit crises, the housing crises or the economic downfall that materialized.
But all are quick with their recommendations. Ten ways to make money today. How to quickly rebuild your retirement accounts and so on. I don’t think I heard any apologies from any of the great minds for steering us into purchasing equities that are now near the flat line.
Why don’t they just admit that they don’t know much about anything. A dart board would have been just as good getting us through the turmoil.

This is not about religion or death. Although I thought I saw the light once when I was struck by a falling tree, but it was just a cop shining a flashlight in my face to see if I was alright.
This is about seeing what is important in life. It annoys and saddens me when I see that many people are focused on the wrong things their whole lives only to realize it when they are too old to enjoy what they have. I have some older friends (there are a few older then me) and I can’t tell you how many times I have heard the phrase “if only I knew then what I see now”. Don’t want to preach but take a moment to think about it.

Got up this morning at 5 am. Got ready and out the door by about 5:30. Was at the dock 15 minutes later and started the small engine and was on may way within a few minutes. It was beautiful on the water today. Packed my lunch and drinks had a couple of rods and bait and was at my favorite spot within a half hour and fishing. Caught a few small fish over a three hour period and then I hit the jackpot. A 20 pound stripped bass. Reeled it in real slow and got the net out to make sure he didn’t get off the hook. Everything was perfect. The I took him off the hook and into the bucket and wouldn’t you know it he jumped and flipped right over the edge of the boat and was gone. I could swear he laughed at me as he ..continue reading
