Celebrity rapist

This morning I saw a story about the Oscar winning composer and director of “You Light Up My Life”, Joseph Brooks. He has been indicated for sexually assaulting or raping 11 women. The women all answered audition ads placed on Craigslist. The range in age from 18 to 30.

Brooks, who is 71 lured the women to his apartment with the aide of his personal assistant, Shawni Lucier. Lucier apparently played a willing role in contacting the women, interviewing them and even assuring some of some and their mothers that these were legitimate auditions. Once he had them in his apartment he got them drunk and forcibly raped them or used threats to get them to submit to him.

Being the mother of a daughter this story is appalling to me. In my opinion, if convicted, rape and assault crimes on women should carry minimum prison sentences that can not be reduced, even for first time offenders. I also think that Lucier should get the same sentence for her role, which was as horrible as Brooks’. if it was up to me I would throw the book at them and imprison them for as long as possible.

The one piece of advice I would offer to anyone who auditions or interviews for a job  is to make sure that it is in a public place where there are other people, or bring someone with you.

We will have to wait and see if Brooks get the celebrity version of the law or the one the rest of us have to live with.

I hate to come close to a “blame the victim” mentality, but there is a slim chance that this is less a case of rape than the act of a lying old pervert. It really sucks to doubt any woman’s claim of rape, but the sad fact is that many women HAVE lied about it in the past. We have to consider the possibility - however small - that he promised these women stardom in exchange for sexual favors and then never called them back. When one woman made headlines by pointing the finger, the rest may have hopped on board due to anger and (understandable) humiliation. No woman wants to think that she sold herself for a promise, so she tries to convince herself and everyone else that she was raped - therefore blameless.

I’m not saying I’m sure this is what happens. I’m saying we should consider the possibility before we go screaming for blood. Like I said, it sucks to have to doubt any woman who’s been abused, but this wouldn’t be the first time a woman cried rape because she didn’t get what she wanted out of a consensual sex act.

Jenna, you must feel so incredibly reasonable. I hope you never have to deal with what these women went through. The irony would be too much.

I hope, since I’m one of the girls this has happened to, I really do hope that Jenna DOES have to deal with something like this. I think it’s so easy for people to judge and say all these things about a situation they know nothing about. I HOPE that you or your daughter goes through this so that you know how painful it is when so many blame you and tell you it was your own fault when they don’t even know the real facts.
