A sad day for many of us

Michael Jackson and Farah Fawcett died today. He was 50 she was 62. They had similarities in their careers and very public lives.

Fawcett was almost 30 when she became an overnight sensation staring with Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson in Charlies Angels. I remember the talk in the office after every show. Of the three she was the one everyone followed and most of the tabloid news seemed to be about her. Women had their hair done to copy her look, men and boys bought her poster. Her career had its ups and downs and critics and some of the public were brutal at times. But she proved them wrong with her performance in the TV movie The Burning Bed and her off-Broadway turn in Extremities.

Michael Jackson started his career as a child singing with his brothers and sisters. He appeared to never grow up and was always portrayed as a Peter Pan type of character. He seemed to enjoy that perception and even created a fantasy ranch called Neverland in California. He was the ultimate performer and created dance moves that had not been previously attempted, including his moonwalk. I was at several of his live performances and he was a true star onstage. In his not so private life he was portrayed as strange and there were always rumors about his sexual exploits with young boys. He was grilled both in court and by the media for his antics.

They both had problems with marriages, children and mainly the media and public. They were both stars and tabloid favorites.

The worshiping and then destoying celebrities in this country (as someone else had noted on this site) is a disturbing national pastime.
