Insurance companies don’t care about you!

Last week Wendell Potter testified before a Congressional committee that as a vice president for CIGNA he witnessed first hand that the insurance company attempted to purge any company that had substantial claims.

He stated that as soon as a company came up for renewal CIGNA would increase the rates to the point where most companies could not afford them.

He also witnessed denial of claims and coverage sometimes in life and death situations. He finally decided to quit his position in 2007 when a California family begged the company to provide the coverage for a liver transplant for their 17 year old daughter. CIGNA first denied the claim and then reversed its decision but it came too late. The daughter died just hours after the reversal.

He was also witness to continued efforts by the Insurance industry to kill health care reform under the Clinton administration.

It is time for a change. These companies must be stricktly controled. Insurance coverage must be clearly stated and no dneial of coverage should be arbitrarily allowed by any insurance company. There needs to be an independent board to review the denial of coverage for any life threatening situation.

CIGNA is the epitome of evil. My husband and I used to have them for health insurance, we had no choice because this was the only insurance his employer offered, and we could not afford to go and buy insurance on our own.

Our experience is that they will do anything to get out of paying for everything possible. A few years ago, my husband had to have a colonoscopy. He’d just had his appendix out and they found cancer in it, so they wanted to check his colon to see if there was any cancer still there.

After he had it done, (no cancer, thank goodness!), we got a bill for $900 for the anesthesiologist. Hmm, I was not aware that having anesthesia while having cameras and such stuck up where the sun don’t shine was some sort of luxury and not medically necessary. However, CIGNA refused to cover it.

We had to fight and fight with them, finally, they paid the bill…to the tune of $129. Fortunately, in our state, once an insurance company makes payment, the doctor or hospital is not allowed to go after the patient for the rest. But still, it’s ridiculous.

This sort of thing went on and on, each time my husband or I needed health care services. Every time it was a big fight, ending in a paltry payout to the health care provider. My own doctor actually sent me a letter saying she would no longer see me unless I got some other insurance, or could pay cash, as she decided to no longer accept CIGNA.

Fortunately, my husband’s company was getting tired of all of the complaints from employees as to how much CIGNA sucked, that they dumped them and went back to Blue Cross Blue Shield. We had them before and never had problems. And we haven’t been having any problems with them now, even though hubby was hospitalized FOUR times between March and June, and I had one trip to the ER myself (for a condition that I had to stop getting treatment for because of CIGNA).

CIGNA needs to go out of business, NOW. They are the most evil, money-grubbing excuse for an insurance company that ever existed. The people on top who look for ways to deny coverage all need to be jailed. I hate CIGNA.
