Bringing shame upon a family

The account of the 8 year old Liberian girl sexually assaulted by 4 Liberian boys, none older than 14, in a Phoenix Arizona neighborhood shocked most of us. One of the follow up articles pointed out that soldiers in Liberia had used rape to intimidate the population during the civil war between 1989 and 2003 and that 60-70% of the women there had been sexually molested. There are claims that these violent sexual acts continue today in Liberia.

This was a horrific act and should be condemned. The boys involved should be punished to the full extent of the law.

But the most disturbing thing to me is that the family of the girl has turned its back on her. They claim she has shamed and embarrassed the family. Faced with no other choice the girl has been turned over to Arizona’s child welfare.

It is hard to fathom what is going on in this 8 year old child’s head. Some community friends lure her into a shed with promises of chewing gum. She follows them in and they pin her down and sexually assault her and now her own family has abandoned her.

Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident and is not limited to Liberians. You read about similar incidents every year where a father kills a child because an occurrence perceived as dishonoring the family. In 2008 a Pakistani man in Atlanta, Georgia killed his daughter because she wanted out of an arranged marriage.

What posses a family to elevate shame or embarrassment above the love and protection of their own children? or to take it to the extreme and actually kill their own child?

It is unimaginable.

The child’s father denied that they were shamed by what happened to his daughter and said they want her back. Supposedly they are working with a minister to try to work it out.
