There are still 20 states in the US that allow corporal punishment in the classroom. The hitting of children.

That is mind boggling in a country that considers itself one of the most advanced western nations.

A report by the Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights Watch has an even more distrubing fact. Disabled children receive more corporal punishment than others.

Over 200,000 children are punished by spanking, paddling or other physical means every year. Almost 20% of those are disabled.

The states that still permit this form of punishment include  Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming.

A 6-year-old, first-grade boy with autism, was paddled at his Mississippi elementary school by an assistant principal who weighed 300 pounds. He “picked up an inch-thick paddle and paddled him” on the buttocks, the report said.

One principal was quoted saying  ”I was whipped as a child, so its fine with me” . Another, Roy McCoy, principal of Beekman Junior High School in Bastrop, La. said paddling is no cure-all, “but when other means of correcting behavior have failed to produce the desired improvement, it could be a viable option.”

It is interesting that many of these states are in the conservative South and Southwest those most  vocal about Family Values and morals.

I don’t know how Family Values correlates with beating children. All I know is if any teacher or school administrator touched my child in the school I would not hesitate to take both physical and legal action.
