Say it isn’t so Obama

President Obama’s plans for health care reform are in trouble. That is not news.

For months the “gang of six” which includes 3 Democrats and 3 Republicans worked on getting the Senate’s version of a health care reform plan.

Then Chuck Grassley who was a vocal proponent of a bi-partisan health care plan caved in and started to speak about “pulling the plug on grandma” at town hall meetings in Iowa. At the end of August he finally admitted that “The simple truth is that I am and always have been opposed to the Obama Administration’s plans to nationalize health care, period.” Then Mike Enzi the second Republican started to speak about “death panels”.

So much for bi-partisanship.

The only Republican left of the 3 is Olympia Snowe from Maine. She was one of the few Republicans who voted for the Stimulus package.

The Democrats need 60 votes in the Senate to pass a reform bill.  Although they have 60 seats, many blue dog (conservative) Democrats are not on board yet. And the passing of Senator Kennedy has left them with only 59 seats for now even if they finally unite behind a bill.

Late word has it that seeing that support from Grassley and Enzi are gone, if it was ever there, Obama has turned to Olympia Snowe for his last hope at some bi-partisanship on the bill and the possibility of getting to the 60 votes before a replacement for Ted Kennedy is seated.

Snowe has formulated an plan for passing a smaller bill excluding the public option but with a provision of “triggering” a public option if the private insurance sector does not comply with requirements by a certain date.

If Obama is actually considering this type of “reform” I think he would be doing a major disservice to Americans who are looking for real health care reform. What we need is control and direction of the health care industry. We don’t want to give them options to comply. We all know where that will lead.

When it comes to real health care for all Americans, mandates must be put in place and enacted immediately. We do not need a carrot and stick game with insurance companies. They have had control of health care of Americans for years and their only concern it the bottom line and making greater profits. It certainly is not the health and well being of its customers.

Don’t do it Obama. We need real health care reform.
