False Positives

The right wing thinks it has found something new on the Obama administration.

Yesterday the White House released a list of names of people who visited the WH between January 20, 2009 and July 31, 2009.

The right wing bloggers and talking heads went crazy.

The list of well known people included Steve Ballmer (Microsoft), John Boehner, George Clooney, John Cronyn,  Alan Greenspan, Serena Williams and many more.

The list included only the names who were specifically requested, as can be done by anyone here.

The list also included the names of William Ayers and Jeremiah Wright.

You can guess the rest of the story. Right wing bloggers, talking heads and others jumped on this as proof that President Obama still has ties to these people.

The Weekly Standard’s Michael Goldfarb tweeted “What a Friday afternoon news dump.. I tried to warn you America.  Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers”.

Ed Morrissey tweeted “Jeremiah Wright has visited the White House more ofter than McChrystal and Petraeus combined”.

and there were many more jumping on the bandwagon.

There was only a little problem with this.

White House ethics counselor Norm Eisen responded to these allegations:

“Given this large amount of data, the records we are publishing today include a few “false positives” – names that make you think of a well-known person, but are actually someone else. In September, requests were submitted for the names of some famous or controversial figures (for example Michael Jordan, William Ayers, Michael Moore, Jeremiah Wright, Robert Kelly (”R. Kelly”), and Malik Shabazz). The well-known individuals with those names never actually came to the White House. Nevertheless, we were asked for those names and so we have included records for those individuals who were here and share the same names.”

I am sure the right wingers will not believe this statement and still claim that the infamous Ayers and Wright visited the White House.
