It was standard practice not to pay for things

that was Orrin Hatch’s defense when confronted with the question of why he and the Republicans in control voted in 2003 for the Medicare drug program that will cost over half a trillion dollars over 10 years. “It was standard practice not to pay for things”. Hatch actually said this.

Can you say major hypocrites?

He added ”We were concerned about it, because it certainly added to the deficit, no question.” but he says it was OK because it “has done a lot of good.”

I guess insuring an additional 30 million Americans under the proposed bill does not qualify as “doing good”.

talkingpointsmemo points out that when all the Republicans voted for this measure in 2003 that “With no new taxes or spending offsets accompanying the Medicare drug program, the cost has been added to the federal debt.”

Adding to the deficit is the number one issue for Republicans with the health care reform bill, yet in 2003 when they were in control it was no problem. The CBO has concluded several times now that the bill will eventually pay for itself and will actually save money but the Republicans refuse to hear any of that.

At least one conservative sees the truth

“As far as I am concerned, any Republican who voted for the Medicare drug benefit has no right to criticize anything the Democrats have done in terms of adding to the national debt,” said Bruce Bartlett, an official in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. He made his comments in a Forbes article titled “Republican Deficit Hypocrisy.”

“Bartlett said the 2003 Medicare expansion was “a pure giveaway” that cost more than this year’s Senate or House health bills will cost. More important, he said, “the drug benefit had no dedicated financing, no offsets and no revenue-raisers. One hundred percent of the cost simply added to the federal budget deficit.”

“The pending health care bills in Congress, he noted, are projected to add nothing to the deficit over 10 years.”
