The Bush dummies

Over the last few days we heard from many Republicans how Obama is responsible for the attempted attack on the airliner on Christmas day.

Some of the most vocal, hypocritical attacks on Obama are from those Bush dummies, Rove and Cheney.

The other day Rove appearing on Hannity’s show said “Look, they woke him up immediately to tell him he won the Nobel Prize but couldn’t bother to interrupt his vacation for three hours to tell him a terrorist tried to bring down a plane on Christmas Day. And the President waits 72 hours before we hear from him, and it’s over 72 hours from the time of the incident to the time that the President spoke today, and then the President said some things that are simply not true.”

First Obama was briefed immediately when it was apparent that this was an attack and more importantly Rove must have a very short term memory. As noted in the Huffington Post “On December 22, 2001, Richard Reid — known more infamously as the shoe bomber — failed in his attempt to blow up a Miami-bound jet using explosives hidden in his shoe. Coming less than four months after September 11, there already were deep concerns about a potential attack during the upcoming holiday break. Nevertheless, President Bush did not directly address the foiled plot for six days, according to an extensive review of newspaper records from that time period. And when he did, it was only in passing.”

Let’s not forget his initial reaction to being advised of the 9/11 attacks. He froze like a deer in headlights unable to do anything but continue to read My Pet Goat to school children. Rove also forgot Bush’s reaction to Katrina. Although not a terrorist attack, Bush’s Katrina reaction was abysmal and displayed Bush’s inability to react to a traumatic event.

According to thinkprogress the other Bush dummy, Dick Cheney said “As I’ve watched the events of the last few days it is clear once again that President Obama is trying to pretend we are not at war. He seems to think if he has a low key response to an attempt to blow up an airliner and kill hundreds of people, we won’t be at war. He seems to think if he gives terrorists the rights of Americans, lets them lawyer up and reads them their Miranda rights, we won’t be at war. He seems to think if we bring the mastermind of 9/11 to New York, give him a lawyer and trial in civilian court, we won’t be at war.”

“Cheney’s claim that the Obama administration’s response to the attempted airline bombing is “trying to pretend we are not at war” is especially hypocritical because one of the Bush administration’s first public comments on the 2001 attempted shoe bombing specifically called it a “law enforcement” issue. At a press conference five days after the incident, then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld brushed off questions about Richard Reid’s failed bombing by saying, “That’s a matter that’s in the hands of the law enforcement people and not the Department of Defense.” “And I don’t have anything I would want to add,” said Rumsfeld.”

“Rep. Eric Massa (D-NY) blasted Cheney today, saying “that the apparent leaders of the al Qaeda cell in Yemen were 2 terrorists who were released by Vice President Cheney in secret.” “I think there’s a level of accountability that has to be levied personally on the vice president,” said Massa.

“White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer responds to Cheney on the White House blog, saying that “this President is not interested in bellicose rhetoric, he is focused on action. Seven years of bellicose rhetoric failed to reduce the threat from al Qaeda and succeeded in dividing this country.”

Cheney should return to the cave he was hiding in during some of the Bush years.

While I agree with what you write — I, too, am aware of the rank hypocrisies served up by the likes of Cheney and Rove — and I do find pieces like this compelling, I am always left with the discouraging feeling that logic and consistency are not held in high regard by the people who are so facile at leading others astray.

If it were genuine self-righteousness that Cheney expressed, then no matter how wrong headed his assertions, we could imagine he’d acknowledge the good common sense you express. That is beyond the realm of even a wild imagining, so I can only conclude that he and others of his ilk know that what they say is illogical, inconsistent, counterfactual, unethical — and they do not care.

Moreover, I think it likely they are cynical enough to enjoy watching people like us going on about it in logical fashion. And tiring ourselves out with it, too.
