Is this the United States?

The NYT published an article titled “Living on Nothing but Food Stamps”.

It is a scary story and makes you wonder how many Americans are on the brink.

The article points out that there are 6 million Americans who have zero income and are getting by on food stamps.

“Their numbers were rising before the recession as tougher welfare laws made it harder for poor people to get cash aid, but they have soared by about 50 percent over the past two years. About one in 50 Americans now lives in a household with a reported income that consists of nothing but a food-stamp card.”

These Americans “described themselves as unemployed and receiving no cash aid — no welfare, no unemployment insurance, and no pensions, child support or disability pay.”

“One in eight Americans now receives food stamps, including one in four children.”

The article describes the plight of some of these people. One that should be especially scary to middle or upper middle income people who may be on the edge describes Isabel Bermudez who was raised by a drug addicted mother and worked her way up to a sales position selling homes in Florida. She was earning $180,000/year, owned her home and an income property and was raising 2 daughters when the real estate market imploded. She lost her home and investment property.

She says “I went from making $180,000 to relying on food stamps,” she said. “Without that government program, I wouldn’t be able to feed my children.”
