Justin Barrett, the officer in Boston who wrote a racist email calling Harvard professor Gates a “banana eating jungle monkey” is suing the city because he was suspended (with pay).
He claims his civil rights were violated.
Here is the funny (or not so funny part) from his lawyer “The choice of words were poor; but they weren’t meant to characterize professor Gates as a banana-eating jungle monkey. They were meant in a response to behavior and characterizing the behavior. Not the person as a whole.”
Barrett sent a mass email to Boston police officers and the Boston Globe. The jungle monkey phrase appeared 4 times in the email.
But he claims he is not a racist.
The Boston Police Commissioner, Edward Davis said that all of Barrett’s arrests will be reviewed for racial bias.
