Dirty Water

In September I posted here about the problems with water that we use for drinking, bathing, etc.


Yesterday the New York Times posted an article that said that “More than 20 percent of the nation’s water treatment systems have violated key provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act over the last five years.”


“..since 2004, the water provided to more than 49 million people has contained illegal concentrations of chemicals like arsenic or radioactive substances like uranium, as well as dangerous bacteria often found in sewage.”


“..regulatory records show that fewer than 6 percent of the water systems that broke the law were ever fined or punished by state or federal officials, including those at the Environmental Protection Agency, which has ultimate responsibility for enforcing standards.”

The New York Times ran several very disturbing articles about water pollution and the lack of law enforcement against polluters.


How Safe is Your Water? describes how to determine if the water in your community is safe and steps to follow if you have your won well. The article states that “it is not known how many people suffer unreported stomach upsets from bacterial contamination, or even more serious problems, like long-term exposure to contaminants like lead, from drinking tap water.” And “One knotty issue is the presence in the water supply of residues from prescription drugs, personal care products like sunscreen or shampoo, or other substances that scientists call “emerging contaminants.” The E.P.A. says researchers have found these compounds in water almost everywhere they have looked. “
