Life without parole for children

“The United States could be the only nation in the world where a 13-year-old child can be sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole, even for crimes that do not include murder.”

There is a NYT editorial about this issue. An issue that should bother most people since many adults who commit violent crimes in this country receive short sentences or are released on parole after one or more hearings.

The Supreme Court is to hear two Florida cases today.

“Joe Sullivan, the petitioner in Sullivan v. Florida, was sentenced to life without parole in 1989 — when he was just 13 — after a questionable sexual battery conviction. His two older accomplices testified against the younger, mentally impaired boy. They received short sentences, one of them as a juvenile.”

“The case of Terrance Graham has similar contours. A learning disabled child — born to crack-addicted parents — Mr. Graham was on ..continue reading

Republican uses opponent for target practice

The GOP must really want to connect with the hard right wing and members of the NRA.

The Sun Sentinel in Florida reports that the Southeast Broward Republican Club is holding its meetings at a shooting range using handguns and AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles.

“Why are we here? Because we’re Republicans and we appreciate the fact that we have the right to bear arms,” Napolitano (club president) said. “Without the Second Amendment, I don’t think the other amendments would hold up. I think they would just be suggestions that the government would decide to do whatever they want.”

Robert Lowry, a Republican candidate hoping to unseat U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston was at the range taking his turn at target practice.

What was his target? Lowry’s target had the letters “DWS” next to the silhouette head.

Some Republicans just don’t seem to see the big picture when it comes to guns and the depiction of shooting people.

Lowry said ..continue reading

Taking birth control pills may become illegal

Conservatives in Florida want to make it illegal to take birth control pills there.

You know what that means. The vacation industry would die. Spring break, forget about it. And of course the majority of the residents of Florida would wind up in jail.

Tampa Bay Online reports that “Anti-abortion conservatives are proposing a new constitutional amendment that critics claim would make it a crime to take birth control pills in Florida.”

“The “Personhood Amendment” that conservative activists are filing today in Tallahassee would add language to the state constitution that defines someone as a “person,” regardless of age or health status, “from the beginning of the biological development of that human being.”

“On the group’s side is the American Life League, a socially conservative Virginia-based organization that is supporting similar amendments in about two dozen states.”

Although the sponsors of the Florida amendment downplay the fact that this will make taking abortion pills ..continue reading

Florida seems to have it in for town supervisors and managers

In 2007 the city of Largo fired Steve Stanton from his city manager position because he decided to undergo a sex change operation. The operation, he claimed, would have no effect on his job performance. the city did not agree or did not care and fired him. This was after 14 years of above average work and excellent evaluations.

This week the town of Fort  Meyers Beach decide to fire the city manager because he married a porn start last October. they fired Scott Janke because of his wife, Anabella Janke’s profession.

Fort Myers Beach Mayor Larry Kiker said, “Our issue is the situation town was put in in terms of how effective we can govern and whether or not it this was going to serve as a distraction for that, and we felt like it would.”

The lack of tolerance is disturbing. ..continue reading
