Some Republican highlights this morning

The other day Tom Coburn(R-OK) asked people to pray that someone will not show up to vote for health care reform so that the Democrats will not be able to reach their 60 filibuster proof vote.

Apparently James Inhofe (R-OK) did not understand that Coburn was hoping Democrats would not show up, so Inhofe decided not to show up for the second vote.

This was the reaction from one of the tea party wingnuts who called in to talk to Coburn on CSPAN:

“Yeah doctor. Our small tea bag group here in Waycross, we got our vigil together and took Dr. Coburn’s instructions and prayed real hard that Sen. Byrd would either die or couldn’t show up at the vote the other night.”

How hard did you pray because I see one of our members was missing this morning. Did it backfire on us? One of our members died? How ..continue reading

Inhofe got the reception he deserved

James Inhofe the anti-climate crusader was going to save the world from all those perpetuating the climate change hoax.

Inhofe made a great deal of noise about how he was going to Copenhagen and tell the people the “truth”.

Politico reports that Inhofe flew to Copenhagen to deliver his speech.

Upon his arrival at the conference he found a few aides and one report eager to hear what he had to say.

Politico notes

“The senator didn’t have any meetings scheduled in Copenhagen, and he did not see chief U.S. negotiator Todd Stern or the members of the House delegation, who were not scheduled to fly in until later in the afternoon.”

“But Inhofe’s aides eventually rustled up a group of reporters, and the Oklahoman — wearing black snakeskin cowboy boots — held forth from the top of a flight of stairs in the conference media center.”

“We in the United States owe it to the 191 ..continue reading

Oklahoma abortions

Oklahoma County District Judge Daniel Owens extended a temporary restraining order on a law that would post information online about women who get abortions in the state.

The restraining order will be in effect until February when there will be a hearing about whether the law should be struck down.

Oklahoma, the state that brought us the chief obstructionist in the Senate, Tom Coburn and that other climate change clown James Inhofe decided that it would be a good idea to post detailed information on the web about women who have abortions in the state. The information does not include the names but using the data that is collected many women could easily be identified.

State Sen. Todd Lamb who drafted the legislation said that this was “a common sense measure with bipartisan support.”  He added ”We’re not trying to embarrass anybody, hurt anybody or make anybody’s identities known. That’s not the purpose of the legislation. We ..continue reading

The Uganda problem

Uganda is a nation that should know oppression well.

For 8 years in the 1970s Ugandans suffered some of the worst human rights abuses under the rule of Idi Amin. According to Wikipedia “Amin’s rule was characterised by human rights abuses, political repression, ethnic persecution, extrajudicial killings, nepotism, corruption and gross economic mismanagement. The number of people killed as a result of his regime is estimated by international observers and human rights groups to range from 100,000 to 500,000″.

You would think that Ugandans would have learned from that episode in history. You would be wrong.

Ugandan lawmaker David Bahati presented a private member’s bill on Oct. 14 which sought the death penalty and life imprisonment for gay people in the country. The Ugandan government supported the bill because homosexuality and lesbianism are “repugnant to the Ugandan culture,” said James Nsaba Buturo, the minister of ethics and integrity.

This bill is partly a result of some of the positions and strong influence ..continue reading

Furthering the anti-climate change agenda

James Inhofe (R-OK) is persistent if nothing else, even if it means lying to further his anti-climate change agenda.

The climate change critics are acting like little terriers who have latched onto a pant leg and will not let go. They have turned some stolen emails into climate-gate. According to them the emails prove that scientists have conspired for years to lie to the public about climate change.

The emails state nothing of the sort. The critics have taken some terms in the emails that are commonly used by scientists to adjust findings for different time periods and turned this into a “conspiracy”.

But Inhofe marches on. On CNN today he declared

“..if it was just me saying it’d be one thing, but all over the world they’re talking about this. And just this morning the meteorologists — one of the groups — has said that they’re changing their position. Listen, the UK Telegraph — this is worst scientific scandal of ..continue reading
