How long will Ted Kennedy be front page news? my guess is a week or less.

Michael Jackson’s death on the other hand has been front page news almost daily since his death on June 25th, over two months ago.

Is it only me or is there something wrong with this picture?

Jackson was a great performer and produced music that will last for years to come but do his accomplishment really compare to what Ted Kennedy accomplished during his life.

Does Jackson deserve to be idolized and worshipped in the way he was during his life and now after his death?

Kennedy practiced compassionate politics, something rarely seen today in either party. He made an effort to work across party lines and counted among his friends Orin Hatch and Ronald Reagan.

Here is just a short list of some of his accomplishments (from the Chicago Sun times):

Established contribution limits and public financing for presidential elections. ..continue reading

The Jackson money machine continues to roll on

AEG the company that was sponsoring Jackson’s 50 city concert tour will not let him rest in peace. They announced that they are planning a tribute concert in London’s O2 arena.

The “concert” would be on August 29th, Jackson’s birthday. He would have been 51.

AEG is trying to get Jackson’s brothers and sisters to appear and perform. In addition they have approximately 130 hour of Jackson rehersal footage that would be presented.

Beyond the ticket sales for this event AEG is looking into making this a pay per view event.

The money machine just keep on rolling. Shortly they will probably release a DVD and CD of the Memorial event. Then they will release another DVD and CD of this tribute concert. And then they can take the tribute concert on tour.

They will milk this for every dime they can get. Maybe Jackson is laughing at this and the latest Jackson question. Where ..continue reading

Jackson money and drugs

Several stories continue to dominate the media related to Michael Jackson. I was hoping that after the memorial things would quiet down but I guess not.

First is the story that taxpayer money was used to pay for the memorial. This seems like a no brainer to me and I don’t understand why this was not addressed before the memorial took place. If the Jackson family wanted to have a memorial for Jackson they should have come up with the money. After all Jackson’s newly rebounded record sales will generate millions for years to come. Preliminary figures show that 800,000 Jackson records sold for the week ending July 5th. Not to mention the stake Jackson had in the Beatles song catalog. So why with a budget shortfall of $320 million do the taxpayers have to pick up the $1.4 million cost of the event? The City tried to raise funds via ..continue reading

The Michael Jackson Memorial circus

The Michael Jackson Memorial event has turned into a circus. The media seems to have completely abandoned all other news.

The headline news at CNN’s site is Thousands Gather for Final Farewell, Foxnews has Tears for Michael, MSNBC Jackson kin gather for private service, ABCNews Jackson’s casket heads for Stapleton Center. Almost every major media source in the US has something equivalent as its number one story.

Meanwhile in the UK the lead story on the BBC page is Restive Chinese City under Curfew and the Guardian leads with Han Chinese take revenge in Xinjang Ethnic Clashes.

The situation in Iran has almost fallen off the radar as has the case of the two US journalists held by North Korea and sentenced to 12 years in prison and dozens of other stories that may have a greater impact on our lifes than Michael Jackson’s death and memorial.

We have a problem here with idol ..continue reading

Rep. Peter King of NY to the rescue

While I also find that the media frenzy that surrounds Michael Jackson’s death is over the top I find Rep. Peter King’s rant about Jackson being a pervert to be somewhat extreme.

I also find it offensive that Republicans always have to work our troops into every conversation they have about almost any topic. As another poster here indicated the media is giving Jackson’s death much too much attention relative to ordinary people who die each day. But to continually use the troops to subtly score political points is sickening.

Here is what Rep. King had to say:
