What is is new?

The jobless rate dropped for the first time since last August. 247,000 jobs were lost in July and the June numbers were also revised downward. the unemployment rate inched downward to 9.4% from 9.5% the first decline since April of 2008. Economists expected 325,000 job losses and a climb to 9.6% unemployment.

But of course the Republicans pounced on this right away.

The RNC stated:

“While President Obama was taking a victory lap to celebrate the economy’s performance, more Americans lost their jobs and the budget deficit soared to a record $1.3 trillion in July. In the month of July alone 247,000 Americans lost their jobs, which means more than 2.8 million Americans have lost their jobs since the president took office,” said RNC Chairman Michael Steele in an e-mail. “The president said his stimulus bill would keep unemployment from rising higher than 8 percent. It hasn’t. Now he expects ..continue reading

Trina Thompson who graduated from Monroe College in New York this past April decided to sue the college because she can’t find a job. she is suing for $72,000 , the full cost of tuition plus stress related to searching for a job. She graduated with a 2.7 GPA and a degree in Business Administration in IT Technology.

She claims that the college’s career placement office has not done its job in finding her a job. She said the “Office of Career Advancement did not help me with a full-time job placement. I am also suing them because of the stress I have been going through.”

Give me a break!

Has this person read a paper or watched the news lately. There jobless rate is approaching 10%. People with PHDs are willing to take almost any job just to be working and have an income and possible health coverage. I know a guy ..continue reading

Jobless in America

I live in a middle class neighborhood that is fairly mixed both by religion and ethnicity.

I noticed that there is an increase in the number of people who have lost their jobs over the last year. For many it has been a struggle to find a new opportunity. I know a couple of people, one a lawyer the other a middle level manager who have searched for nearly a year. Several others settled for jobs paying about 60% of their previous salaries. While others had to find multiple jobs to make ends meet.

From my perspective the job crises is not showing any signs of recovery. I listen to the talking heads and many are making postives comments that we have hit bottom and the recovery is starting to kick in. I don’t see it.

I read an article by Paul Krugman yesterday. I think he is smart but I don’t always ..continue reading

The Stimulus and job creation

Today’s GOP talking point is the stimulus money and the lack of job creation.

Let’s put things in perspective. Obama has been in office less then 6 months. The stimulus package was passed by Congress and signed by Obama in mid-February, 5 months ago.  The mess we are in is a direct result of the previous administration’s policies or lack of for 8 years and loose or non-existent regulations going back 20 years. It will take longer to turn this around.

But the GOP is happy to try to create havoc. They are hammering at the point that the $787 billion stimulus money has not created the jobs promised. First the entire $787 billion will not go to job creation, second the entire $787 billion has not been distributed to the Fed agencies and individual States, third even the money that has been distributed to the agencies and States has not yet ..continue reading

While still searching for a new position I decided to join a local networking group. I am sorry to report that since joining the group about a month ago it has grown almost 40% in the number of participants.

The stories that some of the people are telling during our meetings are both inspiring and depressing.

One of the members who had a high level position at one of the major financial institutions searched for months for a similar position. Finally he decided to get a job at an organization that works with disabled children. He says the job is rewarding but pays little more then minimum wage. Another member who had a few years experience working for a consulting company and was laid off last fall is now working for a grocery chain. A third member who was the co-owner of a landscaping company that went under is now working for ..continue reading
