Franken strikes again

Today Al Franken did what every other Democrat in Congress should have done for the last few months. Tell Lieberman to shut up.

As talkingpointsmemo describes “Lieberman was giving a ten-minute speech on health care reform. Franken, who was presiding over the Senate, cut him off when his ten minutes were up. When Lieberman requested unanimous consent for an extra few minutes to finish his speech, Franken, in his capacity as a senator from Minnesota, objected. And, in his capacity as presiding officer, Franken honored the objection.”

“After a brief moment of tension, Lieberman laughed and said he didn’t take it personally, and requested that the rest of his speech be put in the record.”

“Then McCain took the floor to defend his friend, saying he’d never seen anything like it.”

As an update talkingpointsmemo notes  ”Franken spokeswoman Jess McIntosh calls to clarify: Leadership today asked all the presiding officers to keep floor speeches — ..continue reading

Lieberman threatens with the F word

Lieberman is really a big thorn in the ass for Democrats and Independents who want to move along with health care reform and start to address the other major problem facing many Americans, jobs.

In his latest effort for another 15 minutes of fame Lieberman, after initial comments that he favors the Medicare option for those under 65, is now against it and is threatening to Filibuster the bill with the Republicans.

Appearing on some of the Sunday news shows Lieberman said “Though I don’t know exactly what’s in it, from what I hear, I certainly would have a hard time voting for it because it has some of the same infirmities that the public option did. It will add taxpayer costs. It will add to the deficit. It’s unnecessary

Lieberman admits that he doesn’t know what is in it but knows that it will cost the taxpayers and add to the deficit.

The bill has not been ..continue reading

Divine intervention for Lieberman

newstimes.com reports that hundreds gathered in front of Joe Lieberman’s house in Connecticut to urge him to see the light on health care reform and support a public option.

“When we heard not only would he vote against it, but he’d use his power, his position as a swing vote … to block it from coming to a vote, we had to send a message so he knows people who vote overwhelmingly favor the public option,” said Rabbi Stephen Fuchs, of Congregation Beth Israel in West Hartford.

“On Sunday, clergy from several religious dominations prayed in three languages outside the fourth-term senator’s home on Strawberry Hill Avenue, surrounded by a crowd the Fire Marshal’s Office estimated to number nearly 500.”

“After several failed attempts to schedule a private meeting with Lieberman, the Interfaith Fellowship for Universal Health Care thought instead they would come to him, said the Rev. Abraham Hernandez, one of the group’s ..continue reading

First Senator to filibuster House bill: Joe Lieberman

Joe Lieberman on FOX News Sunday (where else would Lieberman be?) became the first Senator to quickly voice his opposition to the House bill which passed last night.

This ex-Democrat and now pseudo independent (actually more of a Republican than many Republicans) is willing to stand in the way of health care coverage for over 45 million uninsured Americans.

According to thinkprogress Lieberman has actually picked up the far right wing talking points

LIEBERMAN: A public option plan is unnecessary. It has been put forward, I’m convinced, by people who really want the government to take over all of health insurance. They’ve got a right to do that; I think that would be wrong.

But worse than that, we have a problem even greater than the health insurance problems, and that is a debt — $12 trillion today, projected to be $21 trillion in 10 years.

WALLACE: So at this point, I take it, you’re a “no” ..continue reading

Ego-maniac Lieberman

It appears that the people of Connecticut, or for that matter the people of the United States and their position on health care reform don’t mean a thing to Joe Lieberman.

With the majority of people in this country (and Connecticut) favoring a public option you would think Lieberman would listen to them.

No such luck. To him this is about ego and having his day in the sun.

When questioned about this by reporters in Connecticut yesterday his response, according to Courant.com was “I feel relevant”.

Lieberman seems to forget that the people of Connecticut voted him into office to represent them not represent himself and his friends and donors for the insurance industry. According to this article he has received $1,037,402 from the insurance industry over the last 20 years.

When pressed on the point that the majority favor the public option Lieberman decided that he people of Connecticut just don’t understand or ..continue reading
