There is something wrong with this system

Records released yesterday show that Mayor Bloomberg of NYC spent $102 million of his own money to win a third term. The New York Times notes that it worked out to about $174 per vote. Bloomberg already spent $159 million on his previous two elections for mayor. He has spent more of his own money than anyone else in the US running for public office. Bloomberg outspent his Democratic opponent, Bill Thompson, 14 to 1 in this election.

Nice if you can afford it, but totally absurd.

Why should anyone be allowed to buy an election?

The irony is that Bloomberg helped instituted campaign finance reform in the City but elected not to participate.

I like Bloomberg and he may have been the better candidate for NYC at this time but two things must change. There must be limits on spending on elections and there should be a limit of two terms for this ..continue reading

Guiliani for NYS Governor? hope not

Word has it that Rudy Guiliani is considering running for New York State Governor.

Many have a larger than life image of Guiliani because he was featured in every paper and on almost every TV station in the Country after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in NYC.

The Rudy most New Yorkers know have other memories too. Although he was a tough prosecutor before he was elected Mayor and publicly presented an image of fairness and equality one of his first acts after being elected was to try to sweep house at many City agencies and replace managers with his cronies.

After the attacks Guilani tried to convince the NY State legislature and then Governor Pataki to allow him to run for a third term in spite of term limits. He also tried to convince the candidates running for mayor to allow him to continue to serve up to an additional 6 months. His ..continue reading

Romanian mayor wears Nazi uniform

Romanian mayor, Radu Mazare and his 15 year old son took part in a fashion show over the weekend and “entered the stage marching the clearly identifiable Nazi ‘goose step” according to the Center for Monitoring and Combating anti-Semitism in Romania. Mazare wore a Nazi uniform.

Mazare claims that he did not see the swastikas on the uniform although he admitted that he bought it in a custom shop in Germany because he liked how it looked on Tom Cruise in the movie Valkyrie.

Various Jewish organizations have called for Mazare to apologize and resign. He is not expected to do so.

I have several Jewish friends whose parents lived in Europe before the war and some were in concentration camps and barely survived. Many of these families lost relatives in the camps. I had the opportunity to speak with the father of one of my friends many years ago and he described to ..continue reading

When do constituents say enough is enough?

Marion Barry was arrested again yesterday when a woman claimed that he was stalking her.

Marion Barry is the former mayor of Washington DC and is currently a Washington councilman. His problems with the law extend back to 1990, while serving as mayor (1979-1991), when he was arrested for smoking crack cocaine. He did not seek re-election but did so in 1994 and was re-elected. He was arrested again in 2002 for possession of marijuana but charges were dropped. In 2005 he was placed on probation for not filing taxes for several years and 2006 was stopped for a traffic violation. In 2008 he was placed on probation again for not filing taxes.

When do the people of Washington say enough?

There must be a more qualified candidate out there.
