The NYT published an article titled “Living on Nothing but Food Stamps”.


It is a scary story and makes you wonder how many Americans are on the brink.


The article points out that there are 6 million Americans who have zero income and are getting by on food stamps.


“Their numbers were rising before the recession as tougher welfare laws made it harder for poor people to get cash aid, but they have soared by about 50 percent over the past two years. About one in 50 Americans now lives in a household with a reported income that consists of nothing but a food-stamp card.”


These Americans “described themselves as unemployed and receiving no cash aid — no welfare, no unemployment insurance, and no pensions, child support or disability pay.”


“One in eight Americans now receives food stamps, including one in four children.”

The jobless rate myth

There is a misconception of how many people are out of work or jobless. The latest jobless rate was approximately 9.7% (14.9 million) but that is not the reality and is far from accurate.


As an article in the New York Times points out the rate may be 11% or greater.


The reason is that many have given up searching for jobs. After spending months or longer sending out resumes and receiving no responses or failing to get a job after the rare interview many have decided to either retire, return to full time parenting or just wait for the turnaround in the job market.


According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics that calculates the jobless rate number workers must be actively seeking work within the preceding 4 weeks to be counted in that month’s number (9.7% for August).
