A case was brought before the Supreme Court this week about a cross that was erected on public property. The law states that religious symbols can not be displayed on public land.
A 5-foot cross was placed on federal government land in the Mojave National Preserve to honor soldiers who died during WW1.
An article in Slate provides the following review of the interchange between Justice Scalia and Peter Eliasberg—the ACLU lawyer whose client objects to crosses on government land.
Eliasberg “suggests partway through the morning that perhaps a less controversial World War I memorial might consist of “a statue of a soldier which would honor all of the people who fought for America in World War I and not just the Christians.”
“The cross doesn’t honor non-Christians who fought in the war?” Scalia asks, stunned.

According to an article James Haught on the Council for Secular Humanism website Bush tried to convince then French President Chirac that Iraq must be invaded “to thwart Gog and Magog, the Bible’s satanic agents of the Apocalypse.”

The religious right has reached new lows in its battle to stop Hate Crime legislation.
They were feverishly flooding Washington with petitions condemning the bill.
Here is what was on one of their websites:
We agree that violent crimes should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
We agree that all Americans should receive equal justice under the law.
However, we urge you to actively oppose all “hate crimes” bills which allow federal prosecution for crimes based on “actual or perceived” sexual orientation.
WHAT???? They are saying let us off the hook if we beat the crap out of someone because of their sexual orientation.
And then Newmax published the following. Note the last line of this call to sign petitions. It claims the bill is not final 3 date after the Senate passed it..
Bush had stopped a similar bill when the last Congress was in session.

Various religious groups are trying to convert me wherever I go. Even different denomination within religions (Christian, Protestant, Judaism, etc.) all claiming to have the religious answer that I am seeking so desperately. On the street, in the subway even knocking on my door. Did my name get on some convert a lost soul email list?
I am a happy atheist and don’t intend to change. Can’t they understand that?
