The Tea Party has found a new cause. In a reverse course the Party is seeking to impose a government regulation (instead of getting the government out of people’s lives) to require schools to play Christmas music and have pupils participate.


Calling it the ”Freedom to Present Christmas Music in Public School Classrooms or Assemblies” initiative the Redding (California) Tea Party is dead serious about this.


The local paper the Record Searchlight reports 


“The initiative would require schools to provide children the opportunity to listen to or perform Christmas carols, and would subject the schools to litigation if the rule isn’t followed.”


“Schools currently are allowed to offer Christmas music as long as it is used for academic purposes rather than devotional purposes and isn’t used to promote a particular religious belief, according to an analysis by the California Legislative Analyst’s Office.”

Teachers paid to sit around

As a former New Yorker this story still irks me and should bother anyone anywhere. There are 700 teachers in New York City who are being paid to sit around, play scrabble, practice yoga, surf the web or anything else they want to do, just not teach.


Why? Because these teachers have been accused of various infractions from insubordination to sexual misconduct. The teachers may or may not be guilty of the charges but are not allowed to teach until their cases are resolved. The contract that the unions have with the City will not allow teachers to be terminated and they can not be re-assigned to another job. It is not unusual for some to be in this suspended state for 2-3 years and there are some teachers that have been there for 5-6 years. The cases are heard by 23 arbitrators who work only 5 days a month.
