Republicans and the T word

Republicans and conservatives always claim that they own the rights to certain words.

In recent years it was security, homeland defense and patriotism. The Republicans wanted Americans to believe that they know more about these, they are the only ones who understand these.

Of course this is pure bull.

Now their latest word game is terrorism, terrorists, war on terror and counterterrorism.

They have been pounding Obama since the attempted airline attack on Christmas Day. Obama can not bring himself to say the word terrorism, does not believe in the war on terror and on and on.

They are using the same tactics they used for months in lying to Americans about health care reform.

Repeat the lies over and over again and more and more people will believe it is true.

Unfortunately this is the truth in this country. Especially for those who depend on Fox news for their information.

The reality is that President Obama has ..continue reading

The chorus of lying Republicans

Some two bit right wing blogger named Michael Godfarb made up a story a few days ago that the Obama administration threatened to close an Air force base in Nebraska if Ben Nelson (D-NE) did not vote for health care reform.

Goldfarb could not produce any credible evidence but that didn’t stop Republicans in Congress from calling this one of the most outrageous acts they have ever seen. I guess Bush/Cheney lying us into a war is nothing compared to his unsubstantiated rumor.

thinkprogress reports that Republicans are up in arms about this nonsense. Ben Nelson immediately denied this as “yellow journalism at its worst” adding that this is from “inside-the-Beltway partisans who only want to derail health care reform.”

But the Republicans hammered away

SEN. KIT BOND (R-MO): “The rumors out there, we haven’t confirmed it, but the rumor keeps coming back that he’s threatened to close a major air base in Nebraska. It is total blackmail. It’s the worst kind of ..continue reading

Every day a new revelation about Blackwater

Blackwater (now Xe Services) has seeped into every aspect of our national security.

This is a company whose founder is accused of murder of witnesses by former employees. A company whose employees are accused of murdering Iraqi civilians and more.

As I noted in my earlier post, Erik Prince its founder had close relationships with various conservatives in the Bush administration.

A few days ago it was revealed that Blackwater had been contracted in 2004 by the CIA track down and kill Al Qaeda leaders. The CIA denies that Blackwater was authorized to kill only to collect information and track terrorists. Yesterday it was revealed that Blackwater contractors assemble and load Hellfire missiles and 500-pound laser-guided bombs on remotely piloted Predator aircraft, work previously performed by employees of the Central Intelligence Agency.

The question is why does the CIA need to hire outside contractors, especially Blackwater, to be involved in some of the most important counterterrorism programs? ..continue reading

Protecting Us

This morning there was a scare at La Guardia airport in NY. A man carrying a suspicious bag is being held. The main terminal at the airport was evacuated.

I am schduled to fly in to La Guardia on monday and this evacuation got my attention.

I started to think about how well we are protected and what can really be done if someone is intent on setting off a bomb.

My experience with air travel since 9/11 has been a nightmare as I am sure that it has been for most others. Early arrival at the airport, long lines to pass through detectors, screening of what appear to be the wrong people (grandmothers, young children, etc.) at least to me.

The excitement of preparing and going on vacations to exotic places has been totally destroyed by the “protection” process. Air travel is not fun anymore. It is just a tedious task and as ..continue reading

Airport security probably worthless

I travel several times a month for my business and came across this story that doesn’t surprise me. The whole airport security thing is a farce. The bad guys most likely slip through security checks while grandmothers are stripped searched.

A man, Adrian Elvy, traveling from England to Spain on a business trip realized after going through the security check that he had a 6 inch serrated knife in his luggage. Security did stop him and confiscated a water bottle that was also in the same bag. Mr. Elvy voluntarily turned in the knife before the flight and picked it up from the airport after his return from Spain.
