South Africa finally does the right thing

South Africa is planning to offer free AIDS drugs to children infected with the disease.


This is after being governed for years by President Thabo Mbeki, who denied the link between HIV and AIDS. According to a study by Harvard this resulted in over 300,000 premature deaths.


Approximately 1 in 9 people in South Africa are infected with HIV, the highest number in the world.


Last year Mbeki was ousted and was replaced by Jacob Zuma, who has compared the fight against AIDS to the fight against apartheid. During a speech today he said ’At another moment in our history, in another context, the liberation movement observed that the time comes in the life of any nation when there remain only two choices: submit or fight. That time has now come in our struggle to overcome AIDS. Let us declare now, as we declared then, that we shall not submit.”

AIDS and South Africa

Until last year south Africa was in denial. Denial that cost lives. South African officials denied that there was a link between HIV and AIDS and even recommended unconventional treatments like eating beetroot instead of taking antiretroviral medication.


In October of 2008 the Health Minister, Barbara Hogan finally stated what was accepted in the rest of the world that there is a link between HIV and AIDS.


Now comes word that South Africa has stopped funding research on an AIDS vaccine. Last year South Africa had the highest incidence of HIV of any country with  5.2 million infected. One third of all women between the ages of 20 and 34 were infected with HIV. 


The vaccine that is currently being tested targets the strain most prevalent in South Africa. A researcher at the University of Cape Town said that although funding from South Africa has ended tests will continue with funding from the U.S. ..continue reading
