Republicans attack their own

The current state of the Republican party reminds me of the hyenas. They eat their own.

This past weekend Joseph Cao a Republican from Louisiana voted for the House health care reform bill. He was the only Republican to do so.

As reported on thinkprogress Cao said:

“I read the versions of the House [health reform] bill. I listened to the countless stories of Orleans and Jefferson Parish citizens whose health care costs are exploding — if they are able to obtain health care at all.Louisianans needs real options for primary care, for mental health care, and for expanded health care for seniors and children. [...]“

“I have always said that I would put aside partisan wrangling to do the business of the people. My vote tonight was based on my priority of doing what is best for my constituents.”

What a unique concept. Voting for what your constituents want not what your party is trying ..continue reading

Obama and the Olympics

The GOP and right wingnuts have found something else to whine about.

Obama’s plans to fly to Copenhagen to pitch the Olympic Committee on selecting Chicago for the 2016 summer games.

The reaction from the right was immediate. How can he leave at this time? there are more important things to do and on and on.

The GOP seems to be completely out of touch with reality. First with today’s technology Obama will be in contact to attend to any pressing matters. Second, he is planning to return within 18 hours after his departure.

But that does not seem to mean much to the right which is intent on hammering Obama for anything he says or does.

Michael Steele weighed in with “.. I think that at a time of war, I think at a time of recession, at a time where Americans have expressed rather significantly their concerns and frustrations over the course of ..continue reading

Steele: our rhetoric does not incite violence

Michael Steele was bent out of shape by a column by Thomas Friedman on Wednesday in the New York Times that the current environment is similar to the one in Israel that resulted in the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995.

Steele’s response was ”To make those equations, examples and put that out there that way, to me is just crazy and yeah, I’m sorry, but if you’re going to approach this discussion, approach it from a rational position (LOL).  They’re saying, because you disagree with the president on policy, that all of the sudden we’re going to make this leap into, you know, assassinations and all this other stuff. I mean, at the height of all this stuff on Bush and people complaining and protesting, and jumping up and down, you didn’t have this kind of conversation.”

Steele must be living in a cave (maybe the same one that Cheney was hiding in for part of ..continue reading

Here is where the wingnuts have led their followers

A Facebook user posted a poll asking whether President Obama should be killed.

The options on the poll were “yes”, “maybe”, “if he cuts my health care” and “no”.

Facebook pulled the poll and the application that let the user build the poll.

The Secret Service is investigating.

How long will it take the leaders of the Republican party (Steele, Cantor, Boehner and others) as well as the right wing talking heads to get on the main stream media and denounce this in a very public way?

I wouldn’t hold my breath. These are the same people who are inciting their followers to the point where violence seems acceptable.

The fringe element

I read two articles this morning about the “fringe element”.

The first by Georgia congressman Hank Johnson at ajc.com. He says “ I’ve taken a lot of flak for saying that Wilson’s comments winked at a racist element within the ranks of those who most bitterly condemn the Obama administration.”

“I’ve also been criticized for observing that there is a dangerous, racially motivated fringe within the ranks of those who oppose the administration’s policies. I stand by both statements.”

While many protesters are not racists “..it is equally ludicrous to ignore the alarming increase in extremism, hate speech, threatening behavior and outright racism that has accompanied the decline of reason and civility that tainted this summer’s debates.”

“This dangerous dynamic is out there. It is real. And if we refuse to confront it directly, it will fester, grow and come back to haunt us in ways we haven’t seen in decades.”

The second article by Jonathan Alter at ..continue reading
